Byram Twp. – Tomasa Gladys Cuon, age 84 passed away on November 3, 2023. Gladys was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2014 and passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones.
Born December 29, 1938 in Pinar Del Rio, Cuba, Gladys was one of four children born to Luisa and Miguel Valdes. She immigrated to the United States with her husband, three children, and mother-in law in December of 1967 searching for a better life. She found that better life in the small town of Dover, NJ where she resided for 40+ years before moving to Byram, NJ under the care of her daughter, Cary.
Gladys was a person full of life with a contagiously loud laugh that could be heard above everything else. She was a loving mother, wife, sister, aunt, and friend. She had a big heart and tried to help others when possible. Her culinary skills were awesome too! Her home was always filled with delicious food aromas, warmth, and laughter. There were numerous family gatherings at her home, and she would be disappointed if you didn’t go for a second helping of dinner. Saying… “What’s wrong? You don’t like my cooking?”
She and her husband Octavio having earned a well-deserved retirement, set forth to explore a bit of the world. Traveling to numerous locations domestically and internationally. They always said they were blessed to go on their journeys with a group of fun-loving retirees.
As Gladys begins her ultimate journey to be reunited with her husband Octavio and with family and friends who have gone before her, she will be dearly missed by her family. Especially by her two children – Cary Dixon, Gerardo Cuon, and with their respective spouses Tom Dixon and Ana Cuon. She is also survived by three loving grandchildren – Amanda (33),
Jessica (23), and Miguel Cuon (17). Till we meet again, Gladys/Ma! Love you so very much!
Visitation will be held 5-8pm on Monday, November 6th, at the Bermingham Funeral Home, 216 S. Main St., Wharton. A short funeral service will be held 11:30am on Tuesday November 7th at Restland Memorial Park, St. Giles Chapel, 77 Deforest Ave., East Hanover, NJ. Entombment will follow at the Restland Memorial Park Mausoleum.
