Theresa Hester Obituary

Lawrenceville, NJ:  Margaret Theresa (Nunn) Hester, of Lawrenceville, N.J., passed away on Monday, Dec. 11, 2023 at the age 55 after a short battle with cancer.

Theresa, as she was commonly known, was born on April 22, 1968 in Morristown, N.J. to the late Donald Charles Nunn and Helen Margaret (Singley) Nunn, of Morristown.

She graduated from Dover High School in 1986 and attended Centenary University.

She was married to Thomas J. Hester Jr. for more than 23 years and is survived by their beloved two teenage daughters, Erin Elizabeth Hester and Madeline Rose Hester.

Theresa has devoted her career to advocating for women and families, working for the state Division on Women since 1998, first with the Department of Community Affairs, then with the Department of Children and Families. Her work has focused on improving services and policies for domestic and sexual violence victims.

She was recognized for her efforts by the Department of Children and Families leadership in June 2022, and received the Janice C. Lilien Humanitarian Award in October 2022 from the YWCA Union County for her work to eliminate racism and empower women.

Theresa also worked to improve services and policies for crime victims, enhance women’s health care, support women’s leadership and help women get elected to office.

Through her work, she assisted many advocacy and community providers, while also serving on the boards of the Women’s Political Caucus; Greater Role and Opportunities for Women; the Friends of the Homeless Animals; the Eldridge Park School’s PTO, where she served as Vice President; and the Lawrence Jr. Cardinals Football and Cheer organization, where she served as the cheer director.

She also worked with the Megan Nicole Kanka Foundation.

Theresa was also a frequent volunteer at her daughters’ schools, often organizing cast parties for the theater program and chaperoning field trips.

Theresa also served on the Frenchtown Borough Council in the 1990s for four years, including two as the Council President, during which she worked on and advocated for environmental protection, public health, library, and affordable housing initiatives.

Theresa has also worked for political consulting firms and elected officials, including U.S. Rep. Richard Zimmer, assisting them on women’s issues. She also served on the Lawrence Township Democratic Committee.

Theresa had fond memories of her time marching drum corps with the Grenadettes, Grenadears. Lakelanders, Bayonne Kidets, and the Bayonne Bridgeman.

With her vibrant personality, she loved 1980s music, the movie The Wedding Singer, the television show Gilmore Girls, and especially the Christmas season, when she enjoyed lavishly decorating her home.

Besides her husband, daughters and mother, Theresa is survived by brother Donald Charles Nunn Jr. and his wife Karen, of Moneta, Va.; Edward John Nunn and his wife Andrea, of Wharton, N.J.; nieces and nephews Emily Nunn, of Moneta; Joseph Nunn, of Wharton; Jenna Nunn, of Moneta; Gabby Nunn, of Wharton; Catherine Detwiller, of Durham, N.C.; Case Detwiller, of Fort Drum, N.Y.; and Conor Detwiller, of Newport, N.C.; numerous cousins, whom she considered akin to siblings; father-in-law Thomas J.
