Age 81, of Netcong, NJ, passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening, February 25, 2025, at Hackettstown Medical Center due to complications from pneumonia.
Born in Dover, NJ, Russell grew up in Succasunna, NJ and remained in the area until moving to Netcong in 1981. He was the son of the late Harry Sr. and Marie (nee Trowbridge) Patrey. Russell was preceded in death by his brothers, Harry Jr. and Donald Patrey, and his sisters, Patricia Patrey and Judy Twigg.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Dawn Stott of Allentown, PA, and Melissa Patrey of Schwenksville, PA. Russell is also survived by his grandchildren: Rick Stott (wife Dani), Brian Stott (wife Brittany), Mark Kasper Jr., Jenna Kasper, and Julie Kasper, as well as seven great-grandchildren, who brought him great joy and loved him very much.
Russell joined the U.S. Army in October 1960 and was stationed overseas in Germany as an Armor Intelligence Specialist. He served honorably until his discharge in September 1963, at which point he was transferred to the U.S. Army Reserves, where he continued to serve until October 1966. During his time in the Army, Russell was recognized for his sharpshooter skills and his expertise with the M-14 rifle.
Russell worked for many years as a Diesel Mechanic for County Concrete Corporation and later with Gib Stewart and Sons, both of Kenvil, NJ, until his retirement in 2014.
In his free time, Russell could often be found enjoying his daily coffee at the Dunkin’ Donuts in Budd Lake, where he formed lasting friendships with both workers and customers. He enjoyed going to the horse track, attending car shows, playing the lottery and vacationing with family at the beaches of Florida and North Carolina.
Russell’s final wish was to be cremated, with no viewing or burial. His ashes will be scattered at Sunrise Mountain (NJ), where his brother Harry’s ashes were also scattered. A Celebration of Life will be held in early summer for family and friends to come together to remember Russell and share in the memories of his life. Additional details will be provided closer to the date.
