Dr. Romesh C. Nayar, age 73, entered eternal life on Monday, March 2, 2026 at Morristown Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born on March 23, 1952 in New Delhi, India. His parents were Pratap and Vidya Nayar.
He studied medicine in India and became an ophthalmologist. He immigrated to the US in 1980 and moved to Iowa when he received a fellowship in ophthalmology and completed that work. He then moved to Florida where he worked in a ophthalmology practice for several years. Romesh moved to NYC where he worked in pathology for St. Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital before obtaining his residency in ophthalmology which was a major achievement for a foreign graduate.
He met his wife, Mary Ellen Gilligan at St. Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital during a hospital strike. They were married on April 20, 1985 in the Hospital Chapel.
Romesh’s joy was medicine, family, children. He was innovative and built his own office computer system. Beyond that role, his dedication to his patients, he attended to their needs with vigor and astute knowledge and especially his care of the poor. His death is a loss to our local health care community.
Romesh was a humble and prayerful man who loved much by his deeds and generosity. “The good we did the day before is the one that brings us happiness in the morning”. (Hindu Proverb)
He is survived by his wife Mary Ellen Gilligan Nayar of Wharton, daughters Anita Nayar Gallay and husband Jacob of Denver, CO; Christine Nayar Ediger and husband Mark and 18th month granddaughter Leah of King of Prussia, PA.
Also survived by his brothers, Rakesh and Naresh in India, brother Suresh in Florida, and cousins, Asha, Amit and Sumit Trehan in Long Island, NY
