Robert T. Heslin: Former Wharton Postmaster
November 5, 1940 – October 14, 2023
Wharton: Robert T. Heslin passed through this life peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, October 14, 2023.
Bob was born at Dover General Hospital on November 5, 1940 to the late Thomas H. and Anna (Jewell) Heslin. He was predeceased by his son Brian T., his brother Thomas M. , sister Helen, and his niece, Patty Edwards.
Bob served honorably in the U. S. Army from 1963 to 1965 and was a member of the Wharton American Legion Post 91 for 56 years.
Bob was a clerk, supervisor and then Postmaster of the Wharton Post Office retiring in 1995 after 38 years of service. He will be remembered for the Postal Service Television show “Everywhere – Everyday” viewed throughout New York and New Jersey. After his retirement he was a consultant to the U.S. Postal Service for many years. He was a Distinguished Member of the Postmaster General’s Speakers Bureau.
He was a member of Saint Mary’s Church and ran bingo for many years.
He was past president of the Wharton/Mine Hill Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. Bob was a member of the Wharton Planning Board having served during the time of the Boroughs Sterling Heights section development.
Bob was raised in Wharton and was a lifelong resident, coaching Wharton Midget Football and Wharton Little League Baseball winning the county tournament in 1984.
Survivors include his wife Mary Ann (Portanka), his son Robert M. and his wife Kim, his favorite grandson Shane J. Heslin and favorite granddaughter Katie Heslin who he adored.
His nephew Thomas E. Heslin (Patti), nieces JoAnn Heslin and Cathy Carbone (Craig), grandniece Jaclyn Bagnali (Russ) and Morgan Urban, and grandnephew Bobby Edwards (Alli).
His brother-in-law Paul Portanka, and nephews Michael (Kathy) and Marc, his grand-niece Sara and grand-nephew Ryan.

Visitation will be Tuesday 5-8pm, October 17, 2023 at the Bermingham Funeral Home, 216 S. Main St., Wharton.
A funeral mass will be held 10am on Wednesday at St. Mary’s Church, Wharton.
Interment will follow at Locust Hill Cemetery, Dover.
In lieu of flowers consider donation to New Jersey Sharing Network and Visiting Nurse Association of Morristown.
