Denville: Rev. John A. DeMattia passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026 at St. Clare's Hospital in Denville. He was 83 years of age.
Father John was born in Clifton to the late John and Margaret DeMattia. Father DeMattia graduated from Seton Hall and the former Immaculate Conception Seminary, Darlington. He was ordained May 25, 1968 in St. John’s Cathedral, Paterson. He served as associate pastor at Our Lady of Mercy, Whippany, until 1975 when he was assigned as associate pastor at St. Anthony, Hawthorne.
He then was assigned to St. Peter the Apostle, Parsippany, in 1978 and then in 1979 to St. Joseph in Lincoln Park. In 1980, he was named pastor of Our Lady of Mercy in Whippany. In 2006, he was named by Bishop Serratelli as pastor of St. Mary in Dover, where he remained until retiring in 2014.
He is survived by Eileen Tuohey, Meagan Henneghan and her husband Mark and Grace and Liam Tuohey-Kay.
Visitation will be held 4-7pm on Thursday July 9, at St. Mary's Church in Wharton. A Funeral Mass will be held 10am on Friday at St. Mary's. the Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Paterson.
