Michael Melofchik Obituary

We are sad to announce the passing of Michael John Melofchik, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He passed away peacefully on December 17th, 2022 surrounded by his loved ones.

He was born on December 14th, 1945 in Passaic, New Jersey and lived most of his childhood in Carlstadt, NJ. He attended Lindberg Elementary and East Rutherford High School and graduated from William Paterson University earning a Master’s Degree in Education.

He taught History and Mass Media at Jefferson Township High School for 34 years and loved his profession. He was a favorite teacher among many of the students and was often referred to as “Mr. Mellow” because of his calm demeanor. He was a hardworking man who provided well for his family, in addition to teaching full time, he also worked as a realtor and owned a landscaping business for many years.

He truly loved his family, friends and beloved pets. He enjoyed playing baseball and basketball during his younger years and was on several leagues. As a young man he would go bass fishing and was a member of the Knee-Deep Fishing club.  Later in life he enjoyed watching, coaching and cheering his daughters and grandchildren at their games.

He was an avid reader and gardener, and loved the outdoors and spent many hours landscaping, hiking and taking his dogs to the local dog park. He cherished his time with his family and friends at his vacation home in LBI. He was a loyal NY Mets fan and NY Knicks fan, and loved a variety of music attending many concerts.

Those who knew Mike Melofchik will remember him for his quick wit, sense of humor, and friendly nature. He was a compassionate man who appreciated the simpler things in life, was a good listener and was never quick to pass judgement on others.

Michael John Melofchik is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Margareta (Greta) Melofchik, his loving daughters Laura Castles and Danielle Mollitor, his sons-in-law, Gene Castles and Robert Mollitor and his six grandchildren, Benjamin, Erin, Ryan, Claire, Matthew and Christian. He is survived by his brother, Robert Melofchik and his wife Jodie and his many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his loyal companion and friend, his yellow Labrador, Macy. He is predeceased by his mother, Marie Melofchik and his father Michael P. Melofchik.
