Mark Moreno Obituary

Wharton:  Mark Moreno, 57 of Wharton, NJ, who lived with his mother, Sandra and father, Pedro “Chick” Moreno, peacefully passed away unexpectedly from a short illness on January 5 , 2026 at home.

Mark was born on November 1, 1968, at Saint Clare’s Hospital, Denville, NJ, and lived in Wharton his entire life.    He graduated from Morris Hills High School and attended County College of Morris.   In addition to his mom and dad, Mark is survived by his three loving siblings, Dave “Buzz” Moreno, Debbie Moreno, and Jenny Moreno.  Mark was also a proud uncle to Mikhayla Casey, Matthew, and Madeline Moreno.  A nephew of Robert and Mary Wells, Jackie Pallotta, Terry Loury, Sonny and Anne Moreno, Juanita and Clay Westmorland, as well as several cousins.

Mark led a very interesting life living in Wharton.  He was a Boy Scout, played Little League, midget football, Babe Ruth, and ran track in high school. He was a fantastic black diamond skier, an avid weight lifter for many years, and loved to play golf with his father, who was his hero.  He was also very artistic, played the piano, and taught himself to play the guitar. He formed his own band and wrote many of their songs.  The band played at many venues.  Obsessions and many house parties (aka, the Moreno house) when parents were away.  He loved loved loved Van Halen.  He even ran for Mayor of Wharton in the 90’s and received several hundred votes.

Mark was a Jack of all trades.  He worked at UPS, Dover General Hospital (now Saint Clare’s) for many years, built decks with his father, and lastly worked with the Smith Brothers of Wharton. One of their jobs was in Manhattan on 9/11, which left quite an impression on Mark, which led him to try to enlist in the Marines.  Unfortunately,  he was deemed unqualified due to his mental illness, a condition that plagued him most of his adult life.  He received exceptional care from the PACT team ( Program of Assertive Community Treatment -Saint Clare’s Hospital) for many years, and we were very grateful.

Mark was also a friend to all and kind to everyone.  He had a great sense of humor and the ability to make you laugh, especially when he did his impression of Rocky Balboa and Mickey, his trainer(which he was really good at).  Mark was so proud of himself along with his family for his sobriety of over 20 years.

He was a wonderful person, and we were blessed to have him.  Our Mark was loved dearly and will be sorely missed.
