Marie Berwanger, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2025, at the age of 90 in Dover, New Jersey.
Born in Paterson, NJ, to Thomas and Anna Branigan, Marie was the second of five siblings. After graduating from Central High School, she began working in a blouse factory before marrying and devoting herself to raising a family. Marie later enjoyed employment with A&P in Glen Rock, NJ, and eventually retired from Stern’s department store at Willowbrook Mall. She made her home in Wayne for 40 years before moving to Sparta 9 years ago.
Marie was known for her unwavering devotion to her family, her kind heart, and her remarkable resilience. She touched the lives of many with her warmth and generosity.
She is lovingly remembering by her children: Wayne King and his wife Debbie of Newfane, Vermont; Wade King and his partner Kathy Smith of Sparta, New Jersey; and her daughter, Lois Delaria of Sparta, New Jersey. Marie was a proud grandmother to Kasandra King of Mesa, Arizona, Brianna Delaria of Sparta, and Jennifer Berwanger of Stanhope. She also leaves behind seven great-grandchildren, two stepchildren, two step-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Marie was predeceased by her beloved husband, John Berwanger; her grandson, Christopher Delaria; and her siblings: Marjorie “Marge” Rizzo, Thomas Branigan, Doris Lesko, and Ruth Ann Chumacas.
Her legacy of strength, compassion, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
A private family service will be held to honor and celebrate Marie’s life.
