Margaret Olwen DeAngelis passed away the morning of June 13, 2021. Margaret was born in Columbus, Ohio to Naomi Estelle Thomas and Llewellyn Hilleth Thomas on July 2nd, 1942. Raised by two well-travelled physicists, Margaret was a lover of science and world history. She was admired by her classmates at Cushing Academy and Wellesley College, where she completed a degree in Geology. She taught grade school mathematics and raised three children with her husband, Peter, who relied upon her insight and counsel in all things.
Margaret had a keen intelligence and a sharp, bright sense of humor and was her husband’s one true love. So much so, that to this day, he insists he met her in a dream long before meeting her in the waking world (to this Margaret would characteristically reply “rubbish!” with an impish twinkle in her eye). Margaret’s children benefited from her skills as a teacher throughout their education. She instilled an interest in reading, she tutored them, and she encouraged them to approach the world with equal parts healthy skepticism and avid curiosity. Their childhood was graced with her many creations and flights of fancy ranging from the puppet theater she built for them to the Halloween costumes she made when they went trick-or-treating as Crayola Crayons, to readings from the Space Child’s Mother Goose.
Margaret is survived by her husband, Peter J. DeAngelis; her children, Matthew, Andrea, and Christopher; her brother James Thomas, and her sister Ann Viele. A memorial service will be held at 7 Burnett Road, Mendham Township, New Jersey at a later date.
