Louis Potter Obituary

Jefferson Twp.:  It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Louis Jeffrey Potter, on Saturday, August 15, 2020.  He was better known as Jeff or “Hedge”.  He passed away after a long illness at the age of 55.  He is survived by his son, Jeffrey M. Potter of Lake Hopatcong, his parents: Lou and Julia Potter (nee Pettijohn) of Tucson AZ, and his sister, Joy Durland of Rockaway, NJ, along with her Husband, Jonathan; nephew Cayden, and niece Ella.  He is also survived by many extended family members who will truly miss him.

Jeff grew up in Rockaway, NJ and in his younger years, was an avid skier and spent a lot of time at Craigmuer skiing and biking.  As a teen Jeff started and grew a successful landscaping business where he helped many in the community keep their lawns clean well into the fall. After his teenage years of being in business as a landscaper he acquired a job at County College of Morris where he continued his love of the outdoors.  He retired from a groundskeeper position at CCM after a long career.

Jeff was an active member of Jefferson Township Fire Company #2 from 1990 until 2005 and remained a life member until his passing. He even cut the lawn and volunteered at Fireman’s Field on the weekends to serve the community at the concession stand.  He was always active with the fire department and was truck commander for the towns rescue vehicle #719 for 2 years.  Jeff also volunteered with the fireboat team that is active on Lake Hopatcong.  He was always ready for a call to come through and quickly moved out the door within minutes to serve his community.

If there was one hobby Jeff loved it was fishing.  He would plan for months with his friends for their annual salmon fishing trip in the fall of ever year.  Sun, rain, and even snow he was there to yell “Fish On” with his friends.  He also enjoyed surf and deep sea fishing.  He shared his wisdom and “know how” with his son and the younger generation of his beach family. The “kids” continue to fish and enjoy Jeff’s legacy and love of the sport to this day.

Jeff will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking anyone who would like to remember Jeff to send a donation in his memory to Jefferson Township Fire Company #2 at PO box 965, Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey 07849.
