Joseph Zaycer Obituary

Dover:  On Thursday, December 15th, Joseph Zaycer passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the age of 99.

Joe was born in Wharton, New Jersey, living there until moving to Dover in 1960 where he lived out the rest of his life.

Joe was an American hero, joining the service during WWII and proudly serving in the 3rd infantry division, 30th regiment. He met and married his wife, Ruth, in 1948 and remained so until her passing in 2014. He also remained active with the Wharton American Legion.

Joe worked for L.E. Carpenter Company in Wharton for more than 35 years until his retirement. He was a jack-of-all trades and also enjoyed playing golf, pinochle, dominoes, polka dancing and listening to music, watching Notre Dame and NY Giants football, his beloved Boston Red Sox, and joking and laughing and with everyone he met.

He was a life-long active member of the Hungarian Presbyterian Church of Wharton and later the United Community Church of Wharton during which he wore many, many hats, serving our Lord and singing in the choir. He especially enjoyed fund-raising with paper collections and making pasty pies.

Joe was a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His wife, Ruth, and his oldest daughter, Susan, predecease him. He is survived by his son Ronald  (Nancy) of Cape Coral, Florida, and his daughter, Debra Hulmes and husband William, of Dover, NJ. He was also a loving grandfather to Katie (Sean), Sean, Lauren, Sara (Brendan), Lisa, Stephanie, Michael and Brian (Jennifer). He cherished his great grandchildren Layla, Avery, EJ, Quinn, Theodore, and Vinnie, as well as his extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families.

In his final years he loved sitting on his porch watching the cars, people, news, and the world go by. He was a jigsaw puzzle master and didn’t let the occasional pinch of Amaretto go unnoticed.

He certainly will be sorely missed. There will be a memorial service on January 29th, 2023, at 12:30pm, at the Wharton United Community Church, 20 Church Street, Wharton, NJ 07885. Friends and family are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the church.
