Wharton: Gordon K. Winch “Gordo” passed away on March 2, 2024. He was 87.
Born and raised in Wharton, he lived most of his life in Wharton and was in the last graduating class of Wharton High School in 1953.
He served in the Signal Corps of the US Army from 1956 to 1958. He was employed at Picatinny Arsenal as an Engineering Technician in the Quality Assurance Directorate for 38 years until his retirement in 1991.
Gordo joined the Wharton Fire Department in 1958 and was Department Secretary in 1961. He served as Hose Company secretary, LT. and Captain, then Chief of the Wharton Fire Department in 1973. He was a member of the Wharton Exempt fire Association. He was on the Credit Committee of the Picatinny Federal Credit Union from Sept. 2010 thru April 2015. He was a former member of Acacia Lodge #20 F&AM.
His hobby after retirement was restoring and showing the mostly 1950’s era cars that he had worked on. His other enjoyment was working in his former yard for 54 years, that was formerly the property of the Wharton & Northern Railroad bordering the Rockaway River.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy I. (Shohan). Survived by his daughters, Debbie Lynch and husband Scott of Bridgewater & Shari Strosser and her husband Mike of Murrells Inlet, SC. Grandchildren Brian Lynch, Katie Lynch, Eric Lynch and his sister Eleanor Mende and husband Dave of Pompton Plains.
The family has respectfully honored his wishes for private services.
