WHARTON – Elveta Demby of Wharton died on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at home. She was 89.
Born in Sumter, S.C., she lived in Wharton for 58 years. Mrs. Demby retired from Howmet Corporation in 1979 after 15 years there. She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church and in later years, Revival Fire Ministries Int’l where she was affectionately known as “The Princess” for her grace, style, and dancing worship. Elveta was also known for her personal recipes, especially baked macaroni and cheese and cheesecake.
She was the resolute spouse of an army veteran. She supported her late husband during his tour in The Korean War and later Korean deployment. She traveled extensively throughout Europe, giving birth to two of her five children overseas.
She was predeceased by her parents Nelson and Sarah Smalls, her husband John Demby Sr., and her son, John Demby III.
She leaves to cherish her memory two sons: Stanley Demby (Andrea) of Wharton, Clayton Demby (Brenda) of Homestead, FL; two daughters, Caroline Demby of Wharton, and Jennifer Demby of Wharton, five grandchildren, Desma Demby-Llamas (Gabriel), Andre’ Watkins, Michael Demby (Gabrielle), John Demby IV, and Troy Stevens and seven great grandchildren, Christian, Isaac, Esteban, Aiden Llamas, Genevieve Demby, Troy III (T3) and Jaxon Stevens. one sister, Dorothy Rivers of S.C. and one brother Clement Smalls (Sadie) of S.C., her lifetime friends Lorraine King and Sue Haynes and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 from 9:30-10:30 AM with the Homegoing service starting at 10:30 AM.
Entombment will follow at Restland Memorial Park in East Hanover.
