Edith Youngs Trengove, 99, of Hackettstown, NJ ended her earthly journey December 4, 2024. She was born Feb. 25, 1925, in Morristown, NJ to George E. and Emily (Cogan) Youngs. A lifelong resident of New Jersey, she spent her early years living on the family farm in Mount Freedom. When her father passed, she and her mother moved to Randolph and eventually to Dover. She worked in Wharton for decades in the Trengove Insurance Agency, making many friends among the customers. She was a member of the Mt. Freedom Presbyterian Church most of her life where she touched the lives of countless children as a Sunday school teacher. She was active in local historical societies. She was the family historian too, teaching her nieces and nephews about her father’s coal business, raising chickens (which she would never eat because they were her friends), and all about the people, communities and ways of life as she grew up.
She married Martin Trengove on October 7, 1989. During the ceremony, the pastor said that as Edith became a Trengove and moved to the Methodist Church with Martin, it would be the first time in generations that there would be no Youngs on the membership list. Once married, they enjoyed traveling across the nation and to Europe. They lived in Wharton for several years before becoming residents in Riverwalk Village, House of the Good Shepherd (HGS) in Hackettstown. Martin passed away in 2008. Edith befriended many of the residents and was loved by all. For many years she would take nightly treks through HGS bringing joy, conversation or birthday wishes to fellow residents with a singing and/or dancing stuffed animal from her large collection. As she celebrated birthdays and holidays while living at HGS, often gifts were stuffed toys for use in her mission to make others smile.
Edith lived a long life, filled with love and laughter. She loved people and was loved right back! She will be remembered for her generosity, her thoughtfulness with card giving for every occasion or none at all; her wicked sense of humor; and her appetite for hot dogs, Reese's peanut butter cups, and coffee ice cream. She learned to text at 87 (!) and stayed in touch that way for years with family and friends. Although she had no children, she “adopted” numerous folks she met through church and her community connections, and many called her “mom.”
Edith was predeceased by her nephews Stanley and Bob Youngs. She is survived by a great nephew, Jef Youngs (Batavia, NY) and several great nieces: Pam Youngs-Maher (Baldwinsville, NY), Joy Youngs (Vernon, CT), Jill Ball (North Wales, PA), and Star Youngs (Vernon, CT), as well as her 2nd -great nephews Parker Ashton-Youngs (Boulder, CO) and Gregory Ball (North Wales, PA); a 2nd -great niece Marisa Hernandez and a 3rd great-niece Amorah Hernandez (Syracuse, NY).
Please join us at Bermingham Funeral Home, 216 S Main St, Wharton, NJ on Saturday, December 21 for calling hours from 10-11 with a brief Celebration of Life Service at 11 followed by burial at Mt. Freedom Cemetery.
