Morris Plains, NJ: Dorothy Gannon Walek, St. Barnabas Operating Room Nurse retiree, 93, of Parsippany NJ passed peacefully on Thursday, July 28th 2022 at Sunrise of Morris Plains. A memorial visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 31st , at the Bermingham Funeral Home, 216 S. Main St., Wharton, N.J. Interment will be private.
Dorothy was born in Newark, N.J. on November 6th 1928, to Thomas and Beatrice Walek (nee Markey). She was wed to John Walek Jr. of Irvington NJ on September 26, 1953, at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Newark, NJ. “Dot” received her nursing degree from Rutgers Newark School of Nursing. She worked for many years at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston NJ as an operating room nurse. She was a tireless worker and volunteer, having served on Parsippany’s District 1 Mt. Tabor Fire Department Woman’s Auxillary, the Parsippany Troy Hills Board of Education, and as a CASA Court appointed child advocate. She co-founded the Parsippany Parents of Exceptional Children to advocate for special needs children in the school district. Dot was a member of Sokol USA Lodge 32 of Boonton NJ, the Warner Lambert Senior Partners Retirement Group and a longtime member of the Glacier Hills Association. She enjoyed traveling, and was proud of her Irish heritage and her extended Irish Family.
She was predeceased by her husband and the Love of her life John Walek Jr.
She is survived by her loving children:
Alice Morgan and her husband, Wendall.
John III and his partner, Dena Chriss.
Thomas and his wife, Janet.
Paul and his wife, Alison.
Dorothy was known as "Mame" to her seven grandchildren; Rachel and her husband, Ben, Kate, Michael, Paul, Ali, Benjamin, and Rosie, and one great-grandchild, Benjamin.
The family would like to thank Dodi and Eric Skovronek and all extended family members for all of their compassion and love. Dorothy will be greatly missed all those whose lives she touched.
