Wharton: Dorothy T. Sohl (“Dot”) passed into the presence of her Lord, Jesus Christ, on Sun. May 15, 2022. She was 99, enjoyed a full life and left a remarkable legacy for her large family.
Originally from Livingston, NJ, she is preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Henry E. Sohl, Sr (“Buff”), son James (Jodi), her sisters, Claire Mueller (Paul - D) and Sr. Margaret William of the Dominican Order.
She enjoyed decades of a long career as a Registered Nurse, ranging from pediatrics to private duty, including being a pioneer in Employee Health Services; a role many companies have long since adopted. She spearheaded nursing scholarships and a local chapter of the Mothers’ of Twins Club. She is also remembered as the beloved crossing guard who wore her nurses’ uniform in her adopted town of Wharton, NJ She also volunteered as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for several years, sharing her talents especially her love of nature and the richness of flowers.
Dot had a sharp mind, a quick wit, a determined spirit with no “glass ceiling” for her or generations to follow. Dot was a devoted wife to one, mother to five, grandmother to 15 and great-grandmother to 26. The spouses of her children unanimously agree that she was also a great mother-in-law. In 1982 she was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer, but in spite of a grim diagnosis, she was intent on meeting grandchildren and great grandchildren who were yet to be born. She succeeded in this endeavor as well.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Wharton, NJ and is survived by her daughters Pat (Torben); Peggy (Mike); Dotty (Bill); Son Henry (Laura); Daughter-In-Law Jodi Zackowitz Sohl (James – D); Niece Nancy Mueller Davis (Joe); 15 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held 4-7pm on Friday May 20, at the Bermingham Funeral Home, 216 S. Main St., Wharton. A Funeral Mass will be held 10am on Saturday at St. Mary's Church in Wharton. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Mine Hill.
