Wharton: Doreen V. Thompson passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 1st, 2026 at St. Clare's Hospital/Dover with her family by her side. She was 89 years of age.
Doreen was born in Roxbury Township and was raised in Kenvil Section before becoming a lifelong resident of Wharton.
Mrs. Thompson worked as a Seamstress and then at Foodtown of Wharton until its closing. She later worked the voting polls as a Poll Worker in Wharton.
Doreen was active in Wharton, serving on the Board of Health and the Water Board. She was a lifetime member of the Wharton American Legion, Post #91 Ladies Auxiliary, the Wharton F.O.P. Lodge #24 as an associate member, and the Red Hat Society, as well as the Wharton Seniors.
She is predeceased by her husband William Thompson who passed in 2013 and her sister, Barbara Marie Valentine who passed in 2011.
She is survived by her dear son, James Smith.
Grand-niece Linda Eckert and grand-nephew, Shawn Eckert.
She is also survived by several great-grand nephews and great-grand nieces, along with many friends throughout her life journey.
A memorial gathering will be held from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at the William J. Hocking, American Legion Post #91, 99 North Main Street, Wharton, New Jersey 07885.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Legion Post #91 or any animal rescue would be appreciated.
