Catherine O'Regan Obituary

Catherine O’Regan sailed into heaven as she slept peacefully beside her spouse of 40 years, Su Bedell, in their home at 21 Deer Trail Point, Wharton NJ 07885 on the shore of Lake Shawnee on March 4, 2026.

Catherine lived life as an adventure. Born in Skibbereen, County Cork, Ireland, Catherine immigrated to NYC when she was 21 and couldn’t believe the lack of knock-you-off-your feet wind and rain America experienced on a daily basis! She was home. She lived with her Aunt Eily and her cousin Mary McLellan in Queens. Catherine helped raise Mary’s kids until Catherine moved out on her own. Mary and Catherine stayed lifelong friends.

She met Su Bedell in 1986. They both worked in Manhattan. Catherine was a Human Factors Analyst She flew around the country between the Programers and the people who needed the computer programs created and made sure everything was working correctly before the systems were put into operation. Su was a Business TV Writer, Director and Producer. They spent their lives together exploring the world’s most non touristy places and making friends with all different kinds of people.

They bought the Lake Shawnee house in 1997 to help care for Su’s mother Mildred Bedell, who lived right across Beaver Cove and had emphysema from a lifetime of smoking. Members of Bedell family have lived on the LS Reservation since the ‘70’s. Catherine loved the lake! She and Su bought the first 2 Kayaks and cut through the waters and even the thin layers of ice in early Autumn on the lake. Her friends called her KATIE KAYAK. Then came the canoe and the power Boats “SKIBBEREEN SKIP I, II, and III.” Always with Captain Catherine at the helm.

But Catherine missed her family in Ireland more as time went by. Visits always seemed too short but with the invention of FT she kept in touch with her sister Anna Crowley daily and her brother Tim O’Regan as well as many of her nieces and nephews scattered about Ireland, England and even Australia.

Catherine had great friends, no enemies and met all types of people with the same kindness. However, you were at your own peril if you were being unkind. Another Irish rebel followed Catherine’s path to America. Her niece, Lorna (O’Regan) Ebert. Aunt Catherine became the steady rudder of Lorna’s life as she became a US citizen, went to college, got married and had 2 girls, Lia and Lara. They talked every day. Catherine loved all of her nieces and nephews and they loved and respected her. Su’s family felt the same way. At their legal marriage ceremony Su said that she knew her family liked Catherine a lot more than they did her…and a great silence fell over the crowd. But that’s for another obituary.

Visitation will be held 1-4pm on Sunday March 8, at the Bermingham Funeral Home, 216 S. Main St., Wharton.  A Funeral Service will be held at 3:30pm.
