Dover: Betty Lewis Spilman passed away at home on January 1, 2026. She was born on June 6, 1923, in Wharton to the late William and Catherine (Casey) Lewis. She graduated from Wharton High School in 1941. After graduation, she began working at Picatinny Arsenal, leaving in 1954 to raise her family. She returned to Picatinny in 1971, working as an executive secretary and office manager until her retirement in 1987.
Betty was active in the community and her children’s lives, volunteering as room mother, PTA member, chaperoning field trips and coordinating scouting and school fund raisers. She also dedicated her time to the Zufall clinic organizing administrative activities and, with her husband, a meals-on-wheels courier. She was a long-time Contemporary Club of Dover member, where she cultivated many lifelong friendships.
Betty had a fondness for parties with family and friends, hosting holiday gatherings and annual backyard themed events. She enjoyed reading, loved playing bridge and tennis, and traveling with her husband and family.
Preceded in death by her husband of 61 years Ron, and by her siblings, Velma Martin, Dorothy Cross, William Lewis, Marjorie Gimler and Jack Lewis.
She is survived by her sons Ronald and wife Diane, Damian, and Christopher and wife JoAnn, two grandchildren, three great grandchildren, seven nephews, three nieces and several grand nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Home-Instead Senior Care Services, Suncrest Hospice and to her primary care giver Terry for the care and love shown to her.
Visitation will be held 10:00 am to 12 Noon on Wednesday, January 7th, 2026 at the Bermingham Funeral Home, 216 S. Main St., Wharton.
A 12 Noon funeral home service will be held to honor Betty. Interment will follow at Locust Hill Cemetery, Dover.
