Bernard E. ("Bernie") Smith, Jr.

Wharton:  Bernard E. Smith, Jr. “Bernie”, passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at VNA Hospice of St. Clare’s/Dover.  He was 93 years of age and the last of eight children.

Bernie was born in Denville and following his military service he moved to Wharton in July, 1954.

Mr. Smith was a driver for NJ Tobacco Company before working at Whippany Paper Board for 25 years, retiring in 1980.  He kept himself busy by doing many side jobs in his retirement.

He was a US Army Veteran of the Korean War.  He was a longtime member of the Wharton American Legion Post #91.

Predeceased by his wife Frances Luella (O’Brien) in 2008 and his son Harvey T. in 2006.

Survived by his four sons:

Harold “Tom” of Rockaway Twp.

Howard “Tim” of Rockaway Twp.

Henry “Tyrone” of Sparta.

Hal “Todd” of Hardwick Twp.

Also survived by six Grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 9, 2023 at the Bermingham Funeral Home, 216 S. Main St., Wharton.

A funeral service will be held 10am on Friday at the funeral home.

Interment will follow at Locust Hill Cemetery, Dover.
