Alvin Brandt Obituary

Alvin G. Brandt entered eternal life on October 8, 2022 at age 100. He was born on Jan. 3, 1922 in West Hoboken (now Union City), New Jersey, the Son of Henry Brandt and Mabel (Webb) Brandt.

Alvin graduated from Emerson H.S. where he studied business and was a proud member of its championship gymnastics team. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater. As Technical Sergeant he was assigned to the support staff for Gen. Douglas MacArthur as a direct report to Gen. Richard Marshall, and remained after the Japanese surrender as part of the occupation forces in Tokyo.

After the war he met the love of his life, Josephine Baldessari. They married in 1950 and in 1959 they bought the house in Wharton where they raised their children and lived to the end of their lives.

Alvin’s career encompassed office work, writing and editing, convention and event planning, and the theater arts, including employment with the American National Theatre Academy, the American Guild of Variety Artists’ National Office and, later with Dover General Hospital, where he had various positions including Personnel Director.

When not working, he especially enjoyed acting, singing and directing with various amateur theater groups, including the Two by Four Players, The Giles Players, and the Dover Little Theater where he was also a Vice President, a Board member and later a Life Member. The Episcopal Actors’ Guild made him a Life Member earlier this year. He also authored the Drama Handbook for Churches, published by Seabury Press.

Alvin was also active for over 60 years with St. John’s Episcopal Church in Dover, singing in the choir, directing plays, and serving as lay reader, Warden and Vestryman.

Alvin was pre-deceased by his wife and loving friend of 63 years, Josephine (Josie) Brandt. He leaves behind a son, Andrew Brandt, a daughter Elizabeth Alcamo, and a son-in-law Robert Alcamo. He also leaves behind a huge library of play scripts, Broadway musical sheet music and piano scores, recordings, and many books about actors, acting, theater history, and Broadway memorabilia.

Visitation will be 4-7 PM Friday, October 14, at Bermingham Funeral home. The funeral service will be at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 11 So. Bergen St., Dover, NJ 07801, at 10 AM on Saturday, Oct. 15.
