Jefferson Township: Melvin “Mel” Jack Wallgren passed away on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at 73 years of age. Mel was born on June 30, 1945 in Brooklyn, NY and grew up in Dumont, NJ.
Mel was known for his infectious laugh and warm smile. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1965-1967 in Germany. He was a skilled carpenter and spent his career working for Carpenter’s Local 15 in Hackensack, NJ, ultimately as a foreman. He took pride in his work, both on the job and at home, and helped many friends and his family with projects over the years, but he was most proud of his family. He loved to spend time on Lake Hopatcong and Lake George either boating or fishing. He was an avid gardener and was always up for a party. He will be missed immensely.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Lucille Wallgren; his children Tracy (and Mike) Acquavella, Scott Wallgren and Michelle (and Tom) Murphy; 8 grandchildren James, Brooke, Abbey, Scott, Angilena, Zac, Ethan, and Kellen; devoted sister Evelyn Babich; sister-in-law Linda Caruso; brother-in-law Arthur Caruso and his wife Edna; many cousins, nieces and nephews both in the U.S. and Norway; and many lifelong friends who were family. Mel is predeceased by his parents, Jack and Therese (Drange) Wallgren, brother Wesley Wallgren and grandson Gavin Murphy.
Family, friends and others whose lives he touched are invited to BERMINGHAM FUNERAL HOME, 216 S. Main St., Wharton, NJ, from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.- 9 p.m. on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 to celebrate his life. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
