Catherine “Kitty” Zafian
August 4, 1939 — June 13, 2019
Wharton: Catherine “Kitty” Zafian (née Philips) passed away suddenly on Thursday, June 13, 2019 at her vacation home in Casco, Maine. She was 79 years of age.
Kitty was born in New York City and has been a resident of Wharton since 1960.
Kitty was employed in the Tax Collector’s office in Wharton in the mid 1970s and subsequently attended County College of Morris where she received her Associates Degree and then worked as a bookkeeper in private practice and at Spartan Oil in Dover.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Wharton Fire Department She also enjoyed her time volunteering at the American Legion Post 91 of Wharton. Kitty was also a member of Saint Mary’s Church in Dover. She enjoyed going to bingo with her friends in both Maine and Wharton. She loved going to Sebago Lake in Maine where she had been visiting since 1971 and bought a summer place in the early 1990s.
Predeceased by her husband Joseph Zafian, Jr. in 2005 and her parents; John Philips and Florence (née Shrimpton) and her brother Ray Philips.
Survived by
Three Sons: Joseph, III and wife Ruthann of Granby, CT
Robert and wife Ruth of Denville, NJ.
James and wife Laura of Somerset, NJ.
Five Grandchildren: Danny, Sara, William, Brian and Erin.
One Brother: John Philips of Independence, MO.
Also survived by many nieces, nephews and her beloved cat, Sambuca.
A memorial visitation will be held from 4pm to 7pm followed by a 7pm service on Thursday, June 27th, 2019 at the Bermingham Funeral Home, 216 S Main St, Wharton. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Kitty’s memory to Camp Sunshine at Sebago Lake, 35 Acadia Road, Casco, ME 04015 would be appreciated.
