Leonard Williams Obituary

Wharton:  Leonard A. Williams passed away peacefully on April 13, 2024.  He was 90.

Len was born in Wharton to the late Charles and Helen Williams.  He lived his entire life in Wharton.

He graduated from Wharton High School in 1950. He attended the RCA Institute (Radio & TV Broadcasting), New York, NY from 1950 – 1952. 

He served in the Navy from 1953 to 1956 as an Electronics Technician aboard the U.S.S Rochester and U.S.S Mansfield during the Korean War.  After the Navy, he worked as an Electronics Technician at Bell Telephone Laboratories (Bell Labs) in Whippany where he worked on the development of Nike Guided Missiles and the first cell towers in Newark. 

Len served in the Wharton Fire Department for 64 years; serving as Chief in 1975; and a member of the Wharton Exempt Fire Association.  He was also an instructor at the Morris County Fire Fighter & Police Training Academy in Morristown and served as the Fire Inspector in Wharton.  Len was also a member of the Wharton American Legion Post #91, William J. Hocking.

He was long time parishioner at St John’s United Methodist Church in Wharton.  He was active as a choir member. 

Predeceased in 2013 by his wife Vincenia (Francomacaro) of 51 years.

He is survived by his son, Laurence (Larry) Williams of Wharton and his daughter, Diane Lagasse and husband Jeff of Mt. Airy, MD.  Grandchildren Nicholas Lagasse and Nadia Lagasse of Mt. Airy, MD.

Visitation will be held 4-8 pm on Monday, April 22, 2024, at the Bermingham Funeral Home, 216 S. Main St., Wharton, NJ.

Funeral service will be held 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at the funeral home followed by entombment at Locust Hill Cemetery Chapel Mausoleum, 168 N Sussex St., Dover, NJ. 

Reception to follow at the Wharton Fire Department, 10 Robert St., Wharton, NJ. 

In lieu of flowers, donations in Len’s memory to the Wharton Fire Department, 10 Robert St., Wharton, NJ 07885 or New Jersey Fireman’s Home, 565 Lathrop Ave, Boonton, NJ 07005 would be appreciated.
